| Funky end to the year |

Canada was fun, if cold -- natch. There was snowshoeing, there were cookies and scotch in front of the fireplace, there was an excursion to a Nordic-style spa complete with outdoor hot tubs. Something about sitting in the hot water while the Quebec snow fell onto your face and fog from the pool swirled around, strangely cool. There were babies and wonderful gifts and crazy conversations. I even got my Timbits and poutine, so the trip was a success.
However, there's been a complication: since the cat now has to undergo subcutaneous hydration every few days (i.e, cat-stabbing), I had a difficult time finding a suitable sitter in time for our departure. Kitty's vet offered boarding, so I took them up on this. Unfortunately, when I picked up the cat again, she picked up some new habits: sneezing, excessively lethargic, refusing to eat or drink. Definitely not acting like herself. My worried-mom instincts have kicked in and have made for some fitful nights of sleep.
(Example, well, she likes to lay on my chest and rest her chin on my hand while purring herself to sleep. I felt her vibrations stop just as her head got heavy and slid off my hand, which registered as being unusual, and in my half-conscious state, I realized I couldn't feel her breathing. This startled me awake in a panic and I had to get a twitch from her before I was satisfied -- she fell back asleep long before I did, staring at the dark ceiling, heart pounding.)
So, I'm writing my new years goals as usual, but there's not much enthusiasm behind them right now. Gotta pick up the kitty antibiotics and hope for the best, really.

| | Toad the Wet Sprocket jeez | ] | This trip will be the first in a while where I have had time to actually clean instead of just stuffing everything against the wall or the closet. Just spending what I had left in washing all the clothes, vacuuming, and cleaning the toilet. Now the kitchen is airy, the floors all mopped, and the counters wiped. All the food has been sorted with some of it going down the drain because it was pretty old or unusable sometime in the next 5 weeks. The frig needs a wipe down but that is it.
The stuff against the living room window is still there but reduced, a little less cluttered looking. The closet is still an abyss of horror.
Today's work: * drop off the recyclables and household hazardous waste (batteries, aerosol cans) * drop off the plastic bags and styrofoam * stop by the bank to get cash * stop by the pet store and stock up on bedding * stop by the grocery store for extra lettuce and ice * wash clothes plus sheets/blankets/pet towels
The last item I'll do later tonight so I can hog up the machines in the laundromat. Not many people in there at 2am!
My cousin and her hubby will be looking after the pigs so they're stopping by in the evening for instructions/tour. Originally we planned for me to bring over the whole kit & caboodle to their apartment. But with a potential job on the horizon in the next week, they needed flexibility to pack/move. They can drive from their current home over to my apartment with ease to check on the pigs. If they need to, they can stay here as well.
Tomorrow will be the little things. General dusting, packing, jotting down the itinerary. Then on Wednesday my mother and I will head to the airport, heading out for holidays with family in Auckland, New Zealand, then to Melbourne, Australia for work/not work.
I wish everyone the best for this holiday season and a happy new year! :-) |
